Rules from the state

• Moving companies in Georgia must hold a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity. DPS certifies movers and enforces state rules on how your household goods are handled and moved within Georgia. Source
• Licensed movers may charge less than the DPS Maximum Rate Tariff but not more, and may not charge for services the tariff does not list. Maximum Rate Tariff No. 7 took effect January 13, 2026. Source
• Moves of 50 miles or less are charged by the hour (by crew size and van). Moves of more than 50 miles are charged by the weight of the goods and the distance. Source
• Before the move you must pick a valuation option on the bill of lading addendum: Released Value Protection at $0.60 per pound per article, at no charge, or Full Value Protection (replacement value) for an extra charge. If the mover does not get your signed choice before the move, you are treated as having chosen Full Value Protection with no deductible, at no charge. Source
• File any claim for loss or damage in writing with the mover within 90 days; the mover then has 90 days to resolve it. If it is not resolved, DPS can help, unless the move started and ended inside the same city limits (then it goes to magistrate court or a private attorney) or crossed state lines. Source
• Get a written, on-site estimate and check the mover's license and insurance before you hire it. For moves into or out of Georgia, file complaints with FMCSA, not DPS. Source
